Feathered Dreams (BFA Graduation Show)
2.7.2025 - 6.7.2025, Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam (NL)

Bo Zhang presented "Feathered Dreams", a series of paintings for her graduation show at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (Amsterdam, NL). The paintings depicting the relationships, dialogues, and tensions between people, animals, and the environment. By alienating everyday objects, amplifying fleeting moments, and employing color schemes such as inspired by animal vision, Bo Zhang seeks to disrupt familiar narratives, create scenes that blur the boundaries between dream and reality, and spark curiosity, empathy, and a deeper awareness of our interconnected existence. A frequently recurring motif in Zhang's art is birds. As a lifelong bird keeper, she is fascinated by their intelligence, vitality, and intricate coexistence with humans. In Zhang's works, she explore possibilities for illustrating birds as metaphors or symbols for a more complete perception of reality.

Best of Graduates 2025
25.7.2025 - 7.9.2025, Galerie Ron Mandos, Amsterdam (NL)

For Best of Graduates 2025, Bo Zhang (Gerrit Rietveld Academie) presents Feathered Dreams, a series of paintings that reflect on the small moments and quiet details of everyday life. In her work, birds often appear as companions or quiet observers; sometimes real, sometimes imagined. These paintings play with the line between what is familiar and what feels slightly off, capturing scenes that seem ordinary at first but slowly reveal something else beneath the surface. Zhang uses oil and acrylic on canvas, often starting from something she notices in her surroundings: a plant strapped into a car seat, birds gathering at a market, or a single light from a television filling a dark room. These small moments grow into paintings where colours shift, shapes blur, and perspective is gently altered. Some works imagine how birds might see the world, using bright colours and unexpected combinations to explore a view that isn’t centered on human experience. About the exhibition: Each year, the Galerie Ron Mandos team, alongside Best of Graduates curator Radek Vana, visits graduation shows across the country to identify standout artists. The exhibition provides a vital platform for recently graduated artists, introducing them to galleries, collectors, and curators.

Graduation Show 2025 Emerging Asian Graduates
30.8.2025 - 13.9.2025, Namuso Gallery, The Hague (NL)

Bo Zhang (b. 1988, China) is a visual artist based between Munich and Amsterdam. She graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (DOGtime) in 2025 with a BFA in Expanded Painting, following an earlier academic career in cognitive psychology, including a PhD from the University of Twente and a background in user experience research. Working primarily with oil and acrylic on canvas, Zhang’s practice often begins with quiet observations from her surroundings. These moments evolve into paintings where colour subtly shifts, forms blur, and perspective gently bends. Deeply personal and reflective, her work is shaped by her life with birds and her enduring interest in how humans relate to the world around them. Rather than depicting only what is seen, she paints what might be sensed, remembered, or imagined - what lingers just beneath the surface. Her paintings invite slow looking, where meaning unfolds through tone, gesture, and detail. Zhang’s work has been exhibited in Best of Graduates 2025 at Galerie Ron Mandos, Amsterdam, and is included in the collection of the AkzoNobel Art Foundation.
